Super Falcons’ rising star, Ucheibe Christy, is basking in joy after securing a nomination for the prestigious African Player of the Year award.
The 22-year-old Benfica Midfielder stands among seven Nigerians vying for the 2023 Confederation of African Football (CAF) women’s player of the year accolade, as revealed in the nomination list recently disclosed by CAF.
Taking to her social media platform, Christy couldn’t contain her excitement, expressing gratitude and honor for the nomination, Footballrover reports
She credited her success to a remarkable 2023, highlighting her achievements in clinching trophies with her club and marking her debut in the World Cup alongside the phenomenal Super Falcons of Nigeria.
“I’m extremely happy, honoured & grateful to God to be nominated for the CAF African Player of the Year award. 2023 was a good year for me, winning trophies with my club and then playing in my first World Cup with the amazing Super Falcons,” she wrote.

Among the other noteworthy Nigerian nominees are Asisat Oshoala, Rasheedat Ajibade, Uchenna Kanu, Chiamaka Nnadozie, Osinachi Ohale, Toni Payne, and Christy Ucheibe.
Impressively, Nigeria leads with the highest number of nominees, with representatives from 12 countries comprising the 30-player list.
Oshoala, the reigning titleholder, clinched the top honor in the 2022 edition, marking her fifth win.
Nnadozie was also nominated in the women’s goalkeeper of the year category, while Randy Waldrum, head coach of the Super Falcons, emerged among the nominees for coach of the year.
The list for the best young player of the year includes the Nigerian trio of Deborah Abiodun, Esther Ajakaye, and Oluwatosin Demehin.
