The Super Falcons of Nigeria have advanced to the quarterfinals of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, thanks to an impressive performance from Rasheedat Ajibade against Burundi.
The Super Falcons defeated Burundi 4-0 in their final group match on Sunday night at the Stade Moulay Hassan in Rabat, securing their spot in the round of eight in the process.
The Super Falcons put on a commanding performance on Sunday, scoring three goals in the first half and one more in the second, in what was appropriately labeled a one sided affair.
In the final group game on Sunday, the Super Falcons carried on from where they left off, after getting back to winning ways against Botswana on Thursday.
The coach Randy Waldrum side came out firing at their opponents – the Swallows with a lot of momentum and were overjoyed to secure the massive victory and all three points.
The Nigerian female team had series of opportunities early into the game but couldn’t find back of the net until the 23rd minute, when Rasheedat Ajibade was hauled down in the box by Burundi goalkeeper Jeanine Irakoze, giving Nigeria a penalty kick.
The forward picked herself up, took the awarded penalty kick, and in the 25th minute, gave Nigeria the lead.
Three minutes after giving up the first goal, the Swallows gave up a second, thanks to Rasheedat Ajibade, who was in excellent form, assisting Peace Efih as the score increased to 2-0.
Just before the half-hour mark, Uchenna Kanu added a third goal off another assist from Rasheedat Ajibade, giving the Central African side no time to catch their breath.
With a three-goal advantage going into the second half, the Super Falcons carried over their momentum with a fourth goal from Kanu right after the break.
The Super Falcons had a few more opportunities in the second half, but they opted to settle with a 4 O victory, which allowed them to advance to the quarterfinals as the Group C runners-up.
Rasheedat Ajibade, who was undoubtedly the outstanding player on the field, posted on her twitter handle shortly after the game to announce that the main game was about to begin.
Rasheedat praised her colleagues for their performance against the Swallows of Burundi and couldn’t contain her happiness as the Falcons advanced to the next round.

After defeating Botswana on Sunday night by a single goal, South Africa progressed to next stage as well with three wins in three games and finished first in Group C with the maximum nine points.
The four semifinalists in this tournament will represent Africa at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, which will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand, hence the quarterfinal matches will be fiercely contested.
