Confluence Queens coach Sabo Okala has expressed disappointment after his team kicked off their quest for Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) Super Six playoff glory with a heavy defeat.
Coach Sabo Okala and his ladies were humiliated during their opening game of the Super Six, as they were humiliated courtesy of a five-star performance by Edo Queens, Footballrover reports.
A 5-1 defeat in their first game at the Samson Siasia Stadium left the coach highly disappointed but ready to inspire his side to glory.
During the match, Emem Essien opened the scoring for Edo Queens barely 13 minutes into the game before Merit Offor equalised for Confluence Queens with a stunning goal.
Edo Queens quickly switched the game around from there, with goals from Goodness Osigwe and Chioma Moses steering them to a huge win.
Emem Essien and Goodness Osigwe each completed their braces, sealing the comprehensive victory.
The Kogi-based side were without their first-choice goalkeeper, Sylvia Echefu, who was replaced in the starting lineup by Ruth Ogana, and her absence impacted the team’s performance.
Speaking after the game, the coach indirectly took responsibility for the loss by suggesting that the goalkeeping department, in his opinion, underperformed.
He acknowledged that such things happen in football and emphasised the need to regroup and strategize improvements with the team’s management.
The coach addressed areas needing improvement, mentioning shortcomings in both goalkeeping and defence.
He expressed optimism, believing a motivational talk could lead to a better performance in the next game.
When asked about his team’s morale following the crushing defeat, Coach Okala, who has a background in psychology, assured that he will motivate his team and prevent them from feeling discouraged.
He also emphasised the importance of staying positive and preparing for the next match.
And for the next match, the coach said,
“We are coming out good; hopefully, we’ll come out with victory.”
He expressed strong confidence in his team’s chances of winning the league title, indicating they are still very much in contention for Super Six glory.
“We are still in the race, very, very much, 150 percent.”
