The Super Eagles of Nigeria faced another frustrating night as they failed to secure a much-needed win in their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
A late equaliser from Zimbabwe denied them victory, leaving head coach Eric Chelle deeply disappointed, Footballrover reports.
Despite dominating large spells of the game, Nigeria couldn’t hold onto their lead, and now their path to qualification looks even more challenging.
Chelle’s post-match reaction revealed his frustration as he defended his players while acknowledging the costly mistakes.
Super Eagles surrender lead in dramatic draw against Zimbabwe
Hoping to bounce back from a sluggish start to the qualifiers, the Super Eagles entered Tuesday’s match in Uyo with high expectations.
Victor Osimhen gave the home side the lead in the 74th minute, expertly heading in a cross from Ola Aina.
However, as full-time approached, the visitors found a breakthrough.
Tawanda Chirewa struck in the 90th minute after Nigeria’s defence failed to clear their lines, handing Zimbabwe a dramatic equaliser.
The result meant Super Eagles remained winless at home in the qualifiers, sitting in fourth place in Group C with seven points—six behind leaders South Africa, who defeated Benin Republic 2-0 in Abidjan.
Rwanda and Benin Republic sit second and third, respectively, while Lesotho and Zimbabwe occupy the bottom two spots.
Eric Chelle reacts, “We deserved to win”
Speaking after the match, Chelle expressed his disappointment but remained proud of his players’ efforts.
“We had the chances to score ten goals in the first half. Zimbabwe came to defend, but my players were the best on the pitch with their possession play and attacking intent,” he stated.
The head coach admitted that fatigue might have played a role in the final minutes, as his team had pushed hard early in the game.
He also defended his decision to avoid bringing on an extra defender, explaining that if the team had held on to their lead, his tactics would have been praised.
Chelle further elaborated on the tactical approach, revealing that they used a diamond formation to create more chances.
He acknowledged that while it was effective in attack, it also placed physical demands on the players.
Despite the setback, he urged his team to refocus, emphasising the importance of securing second place in the group.
“I’m so disappointed for my players, for the country, and the way things are now. We have to start looking at second place. We deserve to win, but this is football,” he added.
