Samuel Chukwueze looked set to be Fulham’s hero on the south coast, but his first assist of the season ultimately counted for little as the Cottagers crumbled late on in a 3-1 defeat to Bournemouth.

The Super Eagles star came off bench to provide the opening goal of the encounter, only for Fulham succumb to a disappointing defeat late into the game at the Vitality Stadium, Footballrover reports.

Chukwueze was introduced in the 67th minute to replace Harry Wilson and barely three minutes on the pitch, he delivered the magic touch that almost changed the game.

In blustery conditions, Bournemouth started brightly, forcing Bernd Leno into early saves, but the Cottagers gradually grew into the contest.

Chukwueze, lively throughout on the right flank, provided the game’s standout moment in the 70th minute.

Spotting Ryan Sessegnon’s run in behind, the Nigerian international split the defence with a perfectly weighted pass, allowing Sessegnon to clip a cool finish over Đorđe Petrović for his first goal of the season.

That moment of quality should have been the platform for the Cottagers to push on. Instead, it sparked a ruthless Bournemouth response.

Within minutes, Antoine Semenyo bulldozed his way past Timothy Castagne to drive home the equaliser.

The momentum swing was complete shortly after when Justin Kluivert unleashed a stunning 25-yard strike into the top corner, sending the Vitality Stadium into a frenzy.

Fulham’s resistance wilted as they pushed for a late leveller, leaving gaps at the back.

Semenyo punished them again in stoppage time to seal Bournemouth’s comeback, leaving Chukwueze’s earlier contribution as little more than a fleeting highlight on a frustrating night.

Chukwueze is part of 23-man Super Eagles squad invited for this month’s decisive FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Benin and Lesotho.
