Rivers United forward, Nyima Nwagua, expressed his disappointment over the team’s inability to bring home the NPFL trophy in the Super Six tournament.
Rivers United faced a crucial match in their final game of the Super Six tournament, where a victory was necessary to secure the championship title for the second consecutive season with 11 points.
Unfortunately, the team could only manage to win two games against Sunshine Stars and Bendel Insurance, while the remaining matches ended in draws against Remo Stars, Lobi Stars, and Enyimba.
This placed Rivers United in third position with nine points from five games, allowing Remo Stars to overtake them on the final league table due to a superior goal difference.
Despite the outcome, Nwagua’s individual performance was commendable, as he contributed seven goals to Rivers United’s 2022/23 campaign.
In the Super Six tournament, he emerged as the team’s leading scorer with two goals. Nwagua’s dedication and skill were instrumental in the team’s overall performance.
Enyimba, the new champions of the Super Six tournament, claimed the prestigious title for the ninth time.
In addition to the glory, they also received the N100 million prize money, solidifying their status as one of the top teams in Nigerian football.
Although the disappointment of falling short in the tournament is evident, Nyima Nwagua’s positive outlook and gratitude reflect the resilience and sportsmanship that define Rivers United.
He remains proud of his team’s efforts and resilience until the very end.
The 30-year-old extended his gratitude to the people of Rivers State, as well as the team’s supporters and well-wishers, for their unwavering support throughout the season.
Looking ahead, he expressed excitement for the upcoming season in the league and on the continent.
“Feel gutted we couldn’t bring the trophy home, but I’m however proud of this team, we fought till the end. Want to thank the good people of Rivers State, our supporters and well wishers for their unflinching support. We look forward to next season in the league & on the continent.” – he wrote on his twitter page.
As they prepare for the upcoming season, the team is determined to learn from their experience and strive for even greater success on both the domestic and continental stages.
