Rivers Angels emerged victorious in the NWFL Super Six tournament’s 3rd place match against Confluence Queens of Lokoja, securing a Bronze medal with a 2-0 win.
The game took place on Sunday, June 11, at the Stephen Keshi stadium in Asaba, Delta state.
Before the match, Rivers Angels had faced disciplinary actions from the NWFL.
They were fined one million naira and had two players suspended due to their misconduct towards match officials after their 1-0 loss to Bayelsa Queens.
Despite their dominance in the first half, the Port Harcourt-based team couldn’t break the deadlock.
However, in the 61st minute, Adaobi Okah took advantage of Confluence Queens’ defensive error and effortlessly scored the opening goal, receiving a well-placed pass from her teammate, Chiamaka Okwuchukwu.
In the 68th minute, substitute Ikekhua Oghenebrume doubled Rivers Angels’ lead, securing a 2-0 victory and sealing the triumph for the Jewels of Rivers.
As a result of their achievement, Rivers Angels will also receive a prize money of three million naira.
Expressing his joy, Rivers Angels coach Edwin Okon praised his team for their success and acknowledged the strength of their opponents.
He emphasized that every team in the NWFL should be respected, highlighting the absence of underdogs and the potential for any team to defeat another.
Furthermore, Okon advised the organizers of the women’s league to enhance the quality of officiating to attract more investments to the league.
