After the inauguration ceremony held by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) on Wednesday, July 26, Hon. Gbenga Elegbeleye disclosed that the 2023/2024 NPFL season is set to commence on August 26, 2023.

The Chairman expressed his confidence in a successful season and emphasized the board’s dedication to aligning the league with the European football schedule.

As part of their commitment to promoting football development in the country, the NPFL Board has introduced a remarkable increase in the prize money for the league winners.

Last season’s champions received N100 million as their reward, but this season, the NPFL has raised the stakes, offering an improved package of N150 million.

Furthermore, a portion of the prize money has been earmarked for crucial aspects such as facility improvement and players’ welfare.

This move aims to incentivize clubs to invest in upgrading their stadia and enhancing their players’ remuneration, ultimately leading to improved performance on the pitch.

To ensure the highest standards of infrastructure and safety, the NPFL Board has announced stringent measures regarding the approval of stadia for hosting matches.

All stadia classified as unfit will remain banned from hosting NPFL matches until they pass inspection.

Footballrover understands that newly promoted clubs will undergo thorough inspection before the season begins.

Any stadium failing to meet the required standards will not be allowed to host any league game.

While addressing concerns about match officials’ performance and welfare, Chairman Elegbeleye shared his optimism for an even better showing from referees this season.

He attributed the success of the previous season to the prompt payment of indemnities and allowances to referees and other match officials.

To maintain this positive trend, the board will continue ensuring that referees receive their dues two days before each game, the Chairman noted.
