Nigeria kicked off their WAFU U-17 Cup campaign with a stunning victory over their bitter rivals – Ghana.
On Saturday, the Golden Eaglets scored four goals against their Ghanaian opponents to take the lead in the WAFU tournament.
Both teams played well, but the Eaglets, headed by Nduka Ugbade, were too strong for their Ghanaian opponents.
Nigeria took the lead in the 13th minute courtesy of a spectacular free kick from Emmanuel Michael.
The Black Meteors looked decent offensively, but didn’t appear to be strong defensively, a flaw that the Nigerians exploited to the fullest.
Precious Williams grabbed Nigeria’s second goal a minute before halftime, but the Ghanaians remained steadfast and battled to get back into the game.
Nigeria went into the halftime break with a comfortable advantage and a desire to build on their great start.
Jubril Azeez then scored the third for Nigeria in the 52nd minute, putting the game out of reach for Ghanaians.
The Black Meteors, on the other hand, mounted a comeback and managed to find the breakthrough in the 58th minute to make it 3-1.
But all hopes was dashed for the Ghanaians, as Nigeria scored their fourth goal in the 71st minute through Light Ike, placing additional doubt on the Meteors.
Before Ghana earned a penalty in the 88th minute to make the score 4-2 at the end of the final whistle.
