“No longer in our hands” — Hugo Broos admits South Africa need miracle to reach World Cup

Hugo Broos reacts during South Africa vs Zimbabwe World Cup qualifier

South Africa’s 2026 FIFA World Cup dream is hanging by a thread after head coach Hugo Broos admitted his side may now need a miracle to qualify.

The Belgian tactician’s frustration was clear following Bafana Bafana’s goalless draw with Zimbabwe in Mbombela—a result that left their fate no longer in their own hands, Footballrover reports.

FIFA Sanction Deepens South Africa’s Qualification Struggle

The situation worsened earlier this week when FIFA deducted three crucial points from South Africa’s tally for fielding midfielder Teboho Mokoena, who was later deemed ineligible to play in an earlier qualifier against Lesotho.

The punishment drastically altered the Group C standings, turning what had once looked like a steady campaign under Broos into an uphill battle.

Since taking charge in May 2021, Hugo Broos has restored belief and competitive edge to the South African national team.

His tenure has seen improved performances, renewed confidence, and a growing connection between Bafana Bafana and their fans.

Yet, this setback has placed enormous pressure on a side that had been steadily rebuilding its identity on the continental stage.

Broos Calls for Belief as South Africa Face Rwanda Test

Despite the grim outlook, Broos has urged his players to stay focused ahead of their decisive final group game against Rwanda on Tuesday.

South Africa must win in Mbombela to have any chance of advancing while also hoping Nigeria defeats Benin in Uyo.

It’s no longer in our hands,” Broos admitted after the Zimbabwe match. “It’s become even more difficult, but it’s not 100 per cent over. Maybe we still need a miracle.”

South Africa currently sit behind both Benin and Nigeria in Group C. A win over Rwanda might not be enough unless results elsewhere go their way.
