Guinea and Mozambique have both clinched qualification tickets for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), slated to be held in Cote D’Ivoire in February 2024.
In an intense Group D showdown at the Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, Guinea managed to secure their qualification with a 2-2 draw against the home team, Malawi.
Robert Saizi, the right winger for Malawi, emerged as the hero, opening the scoring in the 23rd minute of the first half.
In the 88th minute of the second half, Saizi set up his teammate, Lawrence Chaziya, to level the score at 2-2 against the visiting Guinea side.

Earlier in the second half, Aguibou Camara had drawn Guinea level at 1-1 in the 56th minute, and Saidou Sow increased their lead to 2-1 in the 58th minute.
Meanwhile, in Group L, Mozambique pulled off an impressive victory against former Super Eagles handler, Gernot Rohr and his Benin Republic side, at the Estadio do Zimpeto in Maputo.
The match was a rollercoaster ride, with Steve Mounie giving Benin Republic an early lead in the 20th minute of the first half.
However, Mozambique’s football stars, Witi and Guima, quickly turned the tide with two successive goals in the 27th and 31st minutes, ending the first half with a 2-1 lead for the home team.
Jodel Dossou of Benin Republic managed to level the score at 2-2 in the 50th minute of the second half.
The dramatic twist came in extra time when Clesio Bauque scored the heartbreaking winning goal, sealing a 3-2 victory for Mozambique.
With these results, both Guinea and Mozambique secured their spots in AFCON 2024. Guinea finished second in Group D with 10 points, following group leaders Egypt.
Mozambique also claimed their qualification, securing 10 points in Group L, right behind the group leaders and AFCON defending champions, Senegal.
