The Flying Eagles of Nigeria reignited their FIFA U-20 World Cup campaign with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Saudi Arabia, thanks to captain Daniel Bameyi’s ice-cool 94th-minute penalty in a tense early-morning clash on Friday.

Head coach Aliyu Zubair hailed the team’s fighting spirit and credited their determination as the decisive factor in surviving a fierce Saudi challenge, Footballrover reports.

Late Drama as Flying Eagles Edge Past Saudi Arabia

Nigeria started brightly, breaking the deadlock in the 10th minute when Salihu Nasiru pounced on a defensive lapse to fire the Eagles ahead.

Saudi Arabia, however, struck back in the 21st minute through Amar Bin Al Yuhaybi, whose composed finish brought the game level.

The Eagles regained control in the 38th minute as Amos Ochoche smashed home a powerful effort to restore Nigeria’s lead.

But Saudi responded once again before halftime, with Talal Haji curling a superb shot past the goalkeeper to make it 2-2, leaving the game delicately poised.

As the clock ticked down and both sides searched for a winner, Nigeria’s persistence paid off deep into stoppage time when they were awarded a penalty.

Captain Daniel Bameyi stepped up and coolly slotted the ball into the bottom corner in the 94th minute, sealing a crucial victory that kept their World Cup hopes alive.

Zubair Highlights Motivation as Flying Eagles Eye Colombia Clash

In his post-match interview with FIFA.com, Zubair praised the resilience and drive shown by his young side.

— “The players made up their minds that they had to go all out for the three points here, and that is what motivated them,” the coach said.

“Now it’s simple — we have to go all out for the three points against Colombia.”

The win was particularly significant for Nigeria, who had lost narrowly to Norway in their opening fixture.

By overcoming Saudi Arabia, the Flying Eagles not only bounced back but also eliminated their opponents from the tournament.

Zubair’s side now shifts focus to their decisive final group match against Colombia on Monday at 12:00 AM, with qualification hopes on the line.
