Real Madrid’s 2-1 defeat to Athletic Club left many fans stunned, with one key figure in the spotlight: Federico Valverde.
The midfielder didn’t hold back, taking full responsibility for the loss and describing the result as “a hard blow.”
But what exactly went wrong for Real Madrid, and how is Uruguayan preparing for the team’s next challenge?
The reigning La Liga champions faced a tough battle on Wednesday night, falling short in their bid to close the gap on league leaders Barcelona, footballrover reports.
Federico Valverde’s apology after Real Madrid’s setback against Athletic Club
Despite having a goal from Kylian Mbappe disallowed for offside, the visitors struggled to generate significant chances in the first half.
The home team, though unable to break down Madrid’s injury-hit defence, looked more dangerous.
After the break, the hosts took the lead in the 50th minute. Thibaut Courtois made an uncharacteristic error, parrying a cross into the path of Alex Berenguer, whose deflected shot found the back of the net.
Carlo Ancelotti men responded with an equaliser from Jude Bellingham, who capitalised on a rebound from Mbappe’s missed penalty.
However, Athletic struck back just a minute later. Valverde was dispossessed by Gorka Guruzeta in his own half, allowing the forward to race through and score the decisive goal, securing a dramatic victory for the Basque side.
Federico Valverde, who was involved in the crucial mistake leading to the second goal, took full responsibility for the defeat, apologising to his teammates and the fans.
The 26-year-old midfielder expressed his regret but also looked ahead with optimism, confident that his team would bounce back in future competitions.
“Today was a hard blow, but I take the blame… I face it and I apologize. For my teammates and the fans. There is still a long way to go, many competitions, and I am sure that there will be many joys,” Valverde said.
Madrid’s defeat leaves them four points behind Barcelona in La Liga, though they have a game in hand over their rivals.
