Atalanta manager Gian Piero Gasperini has lifted the lid on a crucial turning point in Ademola Lookman’s career, revealing how the Nigerian forward evolved from an individualistic player into a key team leader.
Recall that Gasperini and Lookman had a disagreement back in February after the Nigerian forward missed a penalty during a Champions League match against Club Brugge, Footballrover reports.
But in a post-match press conference, Gasperini not only praised Lookman’s development, he also hinted at a secret plan that could see him wear the captain’s armband before the season ends.
Gasperini’s secret plan for Ademola Lookman’s leadership role
After Atalanta’s emphatic 4-0 triumph over Juventus, Gasperini was full of praise for Ademola Lookman, crediting the 27-year-old’s transformation for both his personal success and the club’s rise.
“Lookman became a fantastic player when he improved his perception of the team. He used to have a more individual approach,” Gasperini said, as quoted by Football Italia.
“He wasn’t a bad guy, but he mostly focused on himself. He made Atalanta great, and Atalanta made him great. I am convinced he can be the captain before the end of the season,” he added.
The Nigerian forward has been a standout performer this season, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in Serie A.
With 50 goals and 21 assists in 109 appearances for Atalanta, Lookman has firmly established himself as a crucial figure in Gasperini’s squad.
Ademola Lookman hits new milestone in historic win over Juventus
Atalanta’s 4-0 thrashing of Juventus was a statement victory, marking the Bianconeri’s first home defeat in Serie A this season.
Mateo Retegui opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Marten de Roon doubled the advantage just after halftime. Davide Zappacosta made it three.
Ademola Lookman put the finishing touch on a historic night, capitalising on a defensive error to fire past the goalkeeper.
With that goal, Lookman not only sealed the victory but also reached an impressive milestone—his 13th league goal of the season, surpassing his tally from last campaign.
He also hit 50th career goal at Atalanta as his contributions have been instrumental in keeping the club in the race for a top-three finish.
With Gasperini’s trust, he could soon lead the team both on and off the pitch.
