The Flamingos of Nigeria struggled heavily in their opening Group D match at the 2025 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, suffering a heavy 4-1 defeat to Canada on Sunday in Morocco.

Canada wasted no time asserting themselves, with Gabriela Istocki opening the scoring in just the second minute, Footballrover reports.

Flamingos Fall Behind Early as Canada Dominates

Despite a close attempt from Azeezat Oduntan on 15 minutes, the Flamingos failed to respond immediately.

The Nigerian side eventually found their footing in the 30th minute when Queen Joseph levelled the score, offering a glimmer of hope.

However, Canada almost regained the lead shortly after, as Istocki’s effort went wide.

Second Half Setbacks Leave Flamingos Chasing

The Flamingos created early chances in the second half on 50 and 54 minutes but could not convert. A VAR review for a potential Canada penalty also came to nothing.

Canada then pulled ahead in the 73rd minute through Melisa Kekic.

Julia Amireh extended the lead with two late goals in the 74th and 84th minutes, completing a dominant 4-1 victory.

The Nigerian team now turn their attention to France, who began their campaign with a 4-2 win over Samoa, as they look to bounce back in their second Group D match on Wednesday, October 22.
