Thomas Tuchel, head coach of the Blues, has affirmed that he was taken aback when Timo Werner publicly expressed his desire for more playing time at Chelsea.
The 26-year-old recently emphasized that he “could be happy” at any other club, and he also stated that he wants to play more in the lead-up to the World Cup in Qatar later this year.
The German forward was subsequently excluded from the Chelsea team that lost to Charlotte on Thursday morning.
However, Tuchel stated that Werner’s absence was due only to a hamstring issue; the manager was then questioned about Werner’s remarks during the game.
“I’m surprised, I would be very happy as a young guy having a contract at Chelsea Football Club. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet” – Tuchel said.

When questioned regarding how Werner may earn more playing time, Thomas Tuchel stated;
“Show quality, take your place and defend your place. I would be one of the happiest people on the planet having a contract with Chelsea. If he said this, I do not understand.”
Tuchel insisted vehemently that he had no plans to sell of Timo Werner this summer despite the uncertainty.
When asked if he expected to bank on the forward again in the upcoming campaign, he answered, “sure, he is our player, sure.”
Since joining Chelsea from RB Leipzig in 2020, Werner has underperformed, scoring just 23 goals in 89 games and frequently been left out of the starting eleven by Tuchel, who has increased the pressure by bringing in Raheem Sterling from Manchester City.
The fact that Sterling started his first game against Charlotte on Werner’s favorite left side of the forward line and is likely to stay there during the upcoming season will only increase the German’s worries about playing time.
