Fortuna Hjørring’s Champions League hopes came to a crushing end on Wednesday night, despite another impressive display from Joy Omewa.
The Nigerian forward found the net in the second leg against SKN St. Pölten, but her goal wasn’t enough to overturn the deficit as the Danish champions bowed out 5-2 on aggregate after a 2-1 home defeat, Footballrover reports.
Joy Omewa Strikes but Fortuna Falls Short
Heading into the clash with a 3-1 deficit from the first leg, Fortuna knew they needed something special.
But their uphill task got even harder just five minutes in when they gave away a penalty, which Jennifer Klein coolly converted to give the visitors an early lead heading into the first-half break.
St Pölten doubled their advantage shortly after the restart through Kess Elmore, leaving Fortuna with a mountain to climb.
However, Omewa briefly reignited their hope in the 58th minute, finishing smartly to pull one back and lift the home crowd.
Yet, despite her energy and persistence, Fortuna couldn’t find a way through any further.
The defeat capped a frustrating night for the Nigerian forward, who has been one of Fortuna’s brightest stars so far this season.
Her goal against the Austrian champions means she has now scored in back-to-back games, adding to her strike in the 1-1 league draw with Kolding IF in their last outing.
At just 22, the Super Falcons prospect is already proving herself as a reliable finisher on the European stage.
But then, she leaves this year’s Champions League campaign with three goals in four appearances—an impressive return she should be proud of.
In total, she has now scored seven times in nine competitive outings for Fortuna this season, and that tally obviously shows her importance to the team.
For a side struggling for consistency, Omewa’s form has been a rare positive.
While Fortuna’s Champions League journey ends here, her performances provide a glimpse of a player on the rise, with the potential to become a huge asset for the Super Falcons.
What’s Next for Joy Omewa and Fortuna?
The early UCL exit adds to a difficult run of results for Fortuna, who have now gone three games without a win across all competitions.
They will need a quick response with a tough domestic fixture looming against league leaders Koge Ladies on Sunday.
For Omewa, it’s another chance to carry her scoring momentum into the Danish A-Liga Women and help her side cut into the six-point gap at the top of the table.
