Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten Bundesliga run hit a worrying note on Saturday—not because of the scoreline, but due to a sudden Nathan Tella injury scare that left fans anxious.
The Super Eagles star was forced off at halftime, leaving plenty of questions hanging over both his club and international future, Footballrover reports.
Nathan Tella’s knock leaves Leverkusen on edge
The Nathan Tella injury scare unfolded in the 35th minute when the winger collided with Union Berlin’s goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow while contesting a lofted ball.
Although both men initially shrugged it off, Tella’s discomfort resurfaced moments later after landing awkwardly during an attacking move.
He managed to complete the first half but failed to return after the break, prompting Xabi Alonso to bring on Moroccan winger Amine Adli.
Leverkusen later confirmed Tella stayed in the dressing room for further observation.
Alonso revealed post-match: “He’s at the hospital now to do some tests. Injured? We need to wait. He felt a little dizzy.”
Nigeria on alert as Unity Cup and World Cup loom
The Nathan Tella injury scare has also set alarm bells ringing for Nigeria.
Tella was already sidelined during the Super Eagles’ recent World Cup qualifiers due to fitness issues and now faces another race against time to be fit for the upcoming Unity Cup and 2026 qualifiers.
The 25-year-old forward has been instrumental in Leverkusen’s title chase this season. A lengthy absence could hurt both his form and his country’s campaign.
For now, club and country can only wait, hoping that this latest setback is nothing more than a minor bump in what should be a defining year for Tella.
