Bayer Leverkusen’s quest to defend their DFB-Pokal title nearly ended in heartbreak, but a late rally and an extra-time winner from Victor Boniface sealed a dramatic 3-2 victory over FC Cologne at the BayArena on Wednesday night.
With their backs against the wall, Xabi Alonso’s men once again proved why they are the kings of comebacks.
Boniface returns with a bang in extra-time thriller
Making his return from a two-month injury layoff, Victor Boniface started on the bench alongside Nathan Tella.
Meanwhile, Leverkusen, unbeaten in all domestic competitions last season, faced a serious threat when Linton Maina fired Cologne into a 2-1 lead in the 54th minute.
Desperate for a response, Alonso introduced Tella on the hour mark before calling on Boniface in the 76th minute.
Patrik Schick ignited hope with a stoppage-time equaliser, forcing extra time in front of a roaring home crowd.
Just eight minutes into extra time, Boniface completed the turnaround.
The Nigerian striker calmly side-footed home from close range, handing Leverkusen the lead for the first time and securing their place in the semifinals.

Boniface’s decisive strike marked his tenth goal of the season, making it back-to-back campaigns where he has reached double digits for Leverkusen.
His tally now stands at seven Bundesliga goals, with one each in the DFB-Pokal, Champions League, and German Super Cup.
The Super Eagles forward has featured in 17 matches across all competitions this season, and his latest heroics reinforce his importance to Alonso’s squad.
As Leverkusen continues their title defence, Boniface’s extra-time winner could prove to be a defining moment in their DFB-Pokal journey.
“We are delighted to get to the semi-final. it was a tough opponent who put us in a difficult situation. we fought until the end and we’re happy with that,” Xabi Alonso said.
