Public Input on Super Eagles Coach: NFF Plans Social Media Poll

Unfortunately, this situation has turned into a social media event, undermining the credibility of football administration in Nigeria.

In a recent statement to the media, the President of the NFF, Ibrahim Gusau, revealed that the governing body intends to seek public opinion to determine the future of coach José Peseiro.

This, along with the consideration of an indigenous coach as an alternative, has fueled further speculation about the coach’s fate.

According to reports from Soccernet.ng, the NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, expressed the NFF’s plan to involve Nigerians in the decision-making process by conducting a social media and SMS poll to determine the Super Eagles coach’s future.

He emphasized the intention to present the options to Nigerians and gather their opinions.

It was acknowledged that both foreign and home-based coaches have been tried in the past, but difficulties were encountered with all of them.

The NFF recognized the possibility of not selecting the right person for the role.

However, they remain determined to gather public input on whether to retain or dismiss Peseiro.

Resorting to a public opinion poll on social media to decide the fate of their employer is a waste of public funds and time for the leadership of the Nigerian Football Federation.

Predictably, Nigerians tend to prefer indigenous coaches over foreign ones, but it is important to evaluate whether this popular choice has truly moved the game forward in Nigeria.

Nigerian football has seen popular indigenous coaches in the past, including Festus Adegboye Onigbinde (2002), Samson Siasia (2010-2011, 2016), Shuaib Amodu (2001/2002, 2008-2010, 2014/2015), the late Stephen Okechukwu Keshi (2011-2014), and Augustine Owen Equavoen (2021).

However, only the late Stephen Keshi managed to win a Nations Cup trophy as an indigenous coach with the assistance of some of the nation’s football legends.

In the lead-up to the 2021 Africa Cup Of Nations (AFCON) in Cameroon, Nigerians called for the dismissal of the former German coach of the Super Eagles, Gernot Rohr, even after he secured a Nations Cup ticket for the nation.

The Nigeria Football Federation heeded the call and replaced him with an indigenous coach, Austin Eguavoen.

However, the Super Eagles exited the competition at the quarterfinals stage.

This scenario has set the stage for the potential dismissal of the current foreign coach, who has secured a Nations Cup ticket in Ivory Coast early next year.

It begs the question of why it is challenging for Nigeria to learn lessons from history.
