Nigerian duo Vivian Ikechukwu and Lawal Taiwo went head-to-head as Club Santos Laguna Women faced Mazatlán FC Women in their LIGA MX Femenil Clausura Round 2 clash on Tuesday.
Ikechukwu grabbed the spotlight by scoring for Santos Laguna, but it was Taiwo and her Mazatlán teammates who ultimately claimed the day, securing a 2-1 home victory at the Estadio de Mazatlán, Footballrover reports.
Mazatlán Women Show Strength and Home Advantage
The 28-year-old former Rivers Angels forward played the full 90 minutes, while Taiwo, 21, featured for 74 minutes before being replaced by Linda Hernández.
Mazatlán FC Femenil continued their strong start to the Liga MX Femenil campaign with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Club Santos Laguna Women, showing character, intensity, and attacking intent from start to finish.
Playing in front of their home fans, Mazatlán wasted no time stamping their authority on the game.
Their positive approach paid off early when Guadalupe Sánchez broke the deadlock, finishing confidently to give the hosts a deserved lead.
Santos Laguna responded well and gradually found their rhythm, refusing to be overrun.
Vivian Ikechukwu Strikes to Keep Santos Laguna in the Game
Their persistence was rewarded before the break as Ikechukwu struck the equaliser with a looping header, bringing the visitors right back into the game and ensuring both sides went into half-time level.
The second half was evenly balanced, with chances at both ends, and as the match stretched, Mazatlán’s belief and energy began to show.
The decisive moment arrived when Lucy Eleanor Ortiz found the back of the net, restoring the home side’s lead and igniting celebrations around the stadium.
From that point on, Mazatlán showed maturity as they managed the game intelligently, defended with discipline, and limited Santos Laguna’s chances as the visitors pushed for another equaliser.
The final whistle confirmed back-to-back wins for Mazatlán Women, while Santos Laguna ultimately fell short against a side that took their key moments, suffering their second consecutive defeat.
Mazatlán will look to build on this momentum in the coming fixtures against UNAM on Saturday, while Santos Laguna return to the drawing board, aiming for a quick response against Guadalajara the next day.
