Super Falcons prospect Lawal Taiwo kicked off 2026 with a statement performance, scoring twice to inspire Mazatlán FC Femenil to a dramatic 3–2 home win over FC Juárez Women on Tuesday evening.
The 21-year-old Nigerian forward played 88 minutes before being replaced by Bethzabeth Barron, displaying her lethal finishing and ability to change games, Footballrover reports.
Lawal Taiwo’s Impact Sparks Mazatlán Comeback
In a thrilling Liga MX Women Clausura 2026 opener, Mazatlán snapped a long winless run that has seen them suffer 17 defeats and two draws, signalling a fresh start for the season.
Juárez opened the scoring early, with Ella Sánchez capitalising on a chance just 10 minutes in. The visitors looked confident, putting the home side under pressure.
Mazatlán responded before halftime. With Juárez briefly vulnerable at the back, Lawal Taiwo received a simple nutmeg pass from a teammate following a loose clearance in the 41st minute, and she fired a precise one-time shot to level the score and lift the crowd.
Second-Half Drama and Mazatlán’s Resilience
After the break, Juárez regained the lead through Grace Asantewaa’s well-taken strike. Momentum seemed to favour the visitors, but Mazatlán’s determination never wavered.
Lawal struck again in the 72nd minute to make it 2–2 and set up a tense finale, following yet another poor reaction from Juárez defenders, and she was assisted by Lucy Ortiz.
The winning goal arrived in the 83rd minute when Abigail Lopez exploited a defensive lapse to secure Mazatlán’s first win in 19 matches, ending the streak and giving the team a morale boost heading into the Clausura campaign.
