English broadcaster and former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker has publicly admitted he misjudged Victor Osimhen, praising the Super Eagles star after his decisive display in Galatasaray’s famous UEFA Champions League win over Liverpool.
Lineker’s comments, made on his The Rest is Football podcast with Micah Richards and Alan Shearer, came as a rare public apology to a player he once doubted, Footballrover reports.
Victor Osimhen Shines in Historic UCL Win Over Liverpool
The Nigerian striker was the difference-maker in Galatasaray’s 1-0 victory over Premier League champions Liverpool at RAMS Park.
Osimhen scored the only goal of the night, outmuscling the Reds’ defenders while delivering the sort of all-round centre-forward display Galatasaray hoped for when they signed him in the summer.
The goal not only secured three crucial points for the Turkish champions but also carved Osimhen’s name in history as the highest-scoring Nigerian in the UEFA Champions League.
Osimhen remains one of Europe’s most dangerous strikers, as his performance earned him the Man of the Match award.
Lineker Apologises and Calls Osimhen “a Hell of a Player”
For Lineker, who had previously questioned Osimhen’s ability to rise to the occasion in big games, the display forced a rethink.
On his podcast, he admitted:
— “I need to apologise to Victor Osimhen. I remember that I intimated that he goes missing sometimes, and I believe that is completely not the case.
So, Victor, if you are listening, I’m sorry about that. You should not spread rumours about these things, so my bad on that.”
He went further in his praise, adding:
— “I saw him play against Leicester in the competition a few years ago, in Europe, and he was exceptional.
You really get a feel for somebody when you’re in a stadium. He’s quick, he’s tall, he’s a good finisher, he’s brilliant in the air, he’s a hell of a player.”
Focus on the Season Ahead
Osimhen has now scored three goals in five appearances this season and will look to maintain his form as Galatasaray continue their domestic and European campaigns.
With a key clash against Besiktas in the Turkish Super Lig up next, the Super Eagles forward will aim to extend his scoring run and strengthen Galatasaray’s push for the title.
