Over the weekend, Remo Stars announced themselves on the continental stage, dismantling Comoros champions Zilimadjou 4-0 in the CAF Champions League preliminary round opener.
From kickoff to final whistle, the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) champions displayed confidence on the ball, letting their opponents know that they are serious contenders in Africa’s top club competition, Footballrover reports.
Leonard Ngenge Leads Remo Stars Blitz
The scoring started early as Leonard Ngenge broke the deadlock after 12 minutes with a cool finish in the box, capitalising on a loose ball from a corner.
The early goal set the tone for a dominant display, putting Zilimadjou on the back foot and energising the home fans in Abeokuta, Remo Stars’ makeshift home.
As halftime approached, Ebuka Anthony doubled the lead when Abubakar found Chilekwu, who cut back for Anthony to slot low.
In the second half, Malian forward Adama Goita extended the advantage after a deft cross by Ibrahim Abubakar.
Late substitute Samson Olasupo capped the emphatic win, receiving a perfect pass from Haruna Hadi and scoring off the bench, as he always does.
This 4-0 victory marked the Sky Blue Stars’ biggest-ever win in continental football and the most significant victory by any Nigerian club since 2022.
Coach Ogunmodede Hails Progress and Readiness
Reflecting on the team’s growth, head coach Daniel Ogunmodede expressed pride in how far the team has come.
— “Some years ago, we were struggling in the second division, but today we are NPFL champions. Now we want to prove ourselves on the continent. This victory shows we are ready,” the Super Eagles assistant coach noted.
With a commanding position heading into the return leg, the Ikenne Boys will now prepare for the possibility of facing South African giants Mamelodi Sundowns in the next round.
