Peter Ademo gave FC Sheriff a dream start, but it wasn’t enough as the Moldovan side suffered a 3-1 home defeat to Dutch visitors Utrecht in the UEFA Europa League Qualification Round 2.
Despite scoring early and raising hopes of a strong first-leg result, the 22-year-old Nigerian midfielder and his teammates now face a huge battle in the return leg, Footballrover reports.
Peter Ademo Scores, but FC Sheriff Let It Slip
It took just 24 minutes for Ademo to make his mark in the Europa League showdown, finding the back of the net with a sharp finish following a long throw-in.
The goal lifted the spirits of Sheriff fans at the Stadionul Orăşenesc, and for a moment, it seemed the hosts could hold firm.
But those hopes were dashed quickly. Just nine minutes after the opener, Utrecht’s Victor Jensen responded with an equaliser, restoring balance and shifting momentum back to the Eredivisie side.
Utrecht Takes Control After the Break
The second half was all Utrecht. Captain Nick Viergever volleyed in a brilliant effort in the 54th minute to give the visitors the lead for the first time in the match.
Sheriff tried to respond, but their midfield was overrun, and their defence struggled to contain Utrecht’s pressure.
In the closing stages, English star Adrian Blake sealed the win for the Dutch side with a solo run and finish that made it 3-1.
That goal not only deflated the home team but also gave Utrecht a two-goal advantage ahead of the second leg.
Now, Ademo and his teammates have it all to do when they travel to the Netherlands, where they must overturn a two-goal deficit to keep their Europa League dreams alive.
