Fast-rising Nigerian forward Joy Omewa continued her brilliant run in the Denmark Elite Division, scoring in her third consecutive match for her team.
However, her brilliance in front of goal was not enough to save Fortuna Hjørring from a narrow 2-1 defeat against Odense in Championship Group Round 5 at the Nord Energi Arena on Saturday.
Despite finding the net once again, Joy Omewa could only watch as her team conceded a late goal to suffer their first loss in eight matches.
The 22-year-old Nigerian sensation remains a shining light for her club, leading the way with an astonishing number of goals for Fortuna Hjørring this season.
Joy Omewa continues hot streak with 17 goals for Fortuna Hjørring
The match started poorly for Fortuna Hjørring, as they conceded just nine minutes in when Rylan Childers gave Odense the lead.
But Omewa, ever the saviour, responded swiftly to a rebound, tapping in an equaliser only nine minutes later to bring her side level heading into halftime.
She had earlier missed an open chance to level the scores for the team when her effort could only hit the woodwork.
The second half saw intense battles from both teams, but it was Odense who eventually broke the deadlock again in the 80th minute, thanks to Dikte Bang.
Despite Joy Omewa’s best efforts and yet another goal to her name, Fortuna could not find a way back and fell to a rare home defeat.
22 goal contributions and counting: Joy is coming despite setback
With her latest strike, Omewa has now recorded 22 goal contributions (17 goals and 5 assists) in just 19 appearances across all competitions—a league-high figure.
She leads Fortuna Hjørring’s scoring chart by a commanding seven-goal margin, showing her incredible value to the team.
Despite the disappointing result, Fortuna Hjørring remains top of the table with 44 points from 19 games, maintaining a 10-point lead over second-placed Nordsjaelland, who still have a game in hand.
The next chapter in Joy Omewa’s incredible season unfolds on Sunday, May 4, when Fortuna Hjørring takes on Koge Ladies.
With her remarkable form, Footballrover will continue to monitor the Nigerian forward to see if she can extend her scoring streak and keep her team’s title dreams alive.
