Gombe United has a new team bus—or at least, that’s what the state government wants everyone to think.

The newly branded coaster bus was presented by the Deputy Governor, Dr Manasseh Daniel Jatau, on behalf of Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who hopes the gift will ease the team’s transportation woes and help push them back toward top-flight football, Footballrover reports.

Can the New Bus Really Reignite Gombe United?

While the gesture is certainly appreciated, a closer look reveals a bus that might be more refurbished than fresh.

And truth be told, Gombe United’s challenges on the pitch go far beyond comfortable rides.

After being the first team to be relegated in the 2023/24 NPFL season—with four games to spare—since then, the club has struggled to bounce back.

Their fourth relegation since 2000 put them among the league’s most demoted sides, behind only Kwara United (6), Wikki Tourists (5), and Jigawa Golden Stars.

From the NPFL to NNL: A Long Road Ahead

Currently competing in the Nigeria National League (NNL), the Savannah Scorpions hasn’t been lighting up the Conference D table either.

After six matches this season, they sit 7th with seven points—nine behind the group leaders, Ranchers Bees FC.

Their record reads two wins, one draw, and three losses, raising the question: can the new bus really fuel a winning streak?

Governor Yahaya’s administration insists the bus is part of a broader push to support the team.

At the handover, Dr Manasseh advised the team to be security conscious on journeys and break long trips that may require night travel.

The General Manager, Anas Bamusa, thanked the government and pledged that the club will strive to restore both its dignity and the pride of the people of Gombe.

Whether this bus will truly drive the Gombe Scorpions back to the NPFL—or just provide a smoother ride for another challenging NNL campaign—we’ll obviously wait and see.

But one thing is clear: the club will need more than a new set of wheels to reclaim its former glory.
