In an exciting move that adds to the growing presence of Nigerians in the NWSL, San Diego Wave FC has once again secured the signing of brilliant midfielder Favour Emmanuel.
The 22-year-old midfielder has completed her transfer from Russian club Lokomotiv Moskva and will bring her exceptional skills to the Wave’s roster for the 2025 season, Footballrover reports.
As part of the deal, she has been handed the No. 24 shirt and will occupy an international slot.
Favour Emmanuel’s rise to prominence
Favour Emmanuel’s journey to San Diego Wave FC has been a remarkable one.
Before her move to Russia, Emmanuel played for Bayelsa Queens, where she helped the team win the Nigeria Women’s Football League Premiership Title and the Nigerian Federation Cup.
Her career soared even further with ZHFK Lokomotiv Moskva, where she made 20 appearances and played a key role in securing the Russian Women’s Cup.
She also earned the Player of the Month award in April and June 2024 for her outstanding performances.
Favour Emmanuel and Chiamaka Okwuchukwu: A growing Nigerian contingent at San Diego Wave
Favour joins Chiamaka Okwuchukwu at San Diego Wave, further enhancing the club’s Nigerian contingent.
Okwuchukwu, a former Rivers Angels star, recently signed with the team, marking a new chapter for Nigerian female footballers in the NWSL.
This will also add to the growing presence of Nigerian female players in the league, placing her alongside the likes of Asisat Oshoala and Deborah Abiodun in the NWSL.
“We are excited to welcome Favour to our club and the city of San Diego. She’s a talented young player that we believe she can make an impact in this league as she bolsters our midfield with her defensive abilities,” the team’s sporting director and general manager, Camille Ashton, said.
With Emmanuel now part of the squad, San Diego is poised to benefit from the talents of two dynamic Nigerian players.
