Al Hilal head coach Simeone Inzaghi has revealed how his team shocked Man City in a FIFA Club World Cup thriller that has the football world talking.
With heart, grit, and courage, the Saudi Pro League team outplayed their English Premier League counterparts to seal a famous 4-3 extra-time win, Footballrover reports.
Al Hilal coach says team’s heartbeat made the difference
City took the lead early in the Club Cup round of 16 with Bernardo Silva’s ninth-minute goal.
But Al Hilal refused to back down. Marcos Leonardo and Malcom turned the tie around before Haaland dragged City level to force extra time.
Kalidou Koulibaly’s header put Al Hilal ahead again, only for Phil Foden to equalise.
But coach Inzaghi’s men stunned Man City once more when Leonardo sealed the Club World Cup win in the 112th minute.
For Inzaghi, the secret was simple — the players, who gave everything.
“The key to this result was the heart they put on the pitch. We had to do something extraordinary because we knew how good Manchester City are; we knew we had to climb Mount Everest without oxygen, and we were great,” he said.
Inzaghi stressed that:
“Guardiola is the best coach in the world, but tonight we did our best, and we deserved the result.”
Al Hilal eye more glory after Man City Club World Cup upset
The win means that the Saudi team will now join Palmeiras, Chelsea, Fluminense, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich in the FIFA Club Cup quarter-finals.
And they will now have to prepare to face Fluminense on July 4.
Al Hilal came close to lifting the FIFA Club tournament in 2023 but lost the final to Real Madrid.
Now, with the team’s coach pushing his players beyond their limits, they hope to make history after toppling City.
