It was indeed an exciting moment for Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman, as he found the back of the net and bagged an assist on his debut to inspire Atlético Madrid to a five-star victory over Real Betis in their Copa del Rey quarter-final clash.
The Super Eagles star scored the third goal of the encounter and set up the 4th as Atlético Madrid swept past their opponents 5–0 at the Estadio de La Cartuja to book a place in the semi-finals, Footballrover reports.
Ademola Lookman shines on Atlético Madrid debut
The Nigeria international recently joined Atlético during the winter transfer window from Atalanta in a deal worth up to €40 million, signing a contract until 2030.
The forward arrived to bolster Diego Simeone’s attack after an impressive spell in Serie A and is already making a significant impact, helping guide the team into the next stage of the Copa del Rey.
The visitors started the game on the front foot and found themselves in front just 12 minutes into the contest.
David Hancko met a corner and displayed his eye for goal, calmly planting a close-range header into the left side of the net to put Atlético ahead.
Copa del Rey quarter-final: Atlético dominate
Just before the half-hour mark, Giuliano Simeone doubled the lead. He latched onto a pass inside the penalty area and fired a perfectly placed low shot straight down the middle, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance.
Seven minutes later, Lookman added a third to make it 3–0. Breaking forward on the counter, he collected a superb pass and produced a precise finish that beat the goalkeeper, with the ball nestling into the bottom-right corner.
The strike was the 100th goal of his career, capping a special night on which he made his debut for Diego Simeone’s side.
And just when many thought Nigeria were finished, he turned provider in the 62nd minute. Showing the playmaking quality he’s known for, he set up the visitors’ fourth goal.
Lookman slipped his strike partner, Antoine Griezmann, through on goal with only the goalkeeper to beat.
Griezmann took the shot early from the edge of the box and finished superbly into the top-right corner.
The former Atalanta man was in action for 79 minutes before making way for Obed Vegas.
Just four minutes later, Thiago Almada pounced on a rebound inside the box, firing into the bottom-right corner to make it 0–5.
