The narrow win secured a 1-0 aggregate triumph for the Pride of Rivers, ensuring their passage to the next round of the competition, Footballrover reports.

Yet, it wasn’t just the result that grabbed headlines — it was a moment of audacious flair that stirred memories of 1994.

Manyo’s Crucial Header Keeps Rivers United’s Dream Alive

The decisive moment came in the second half when Aigles du Congo’s goalkeeper failed to deal with a delivery into the box.

The loose ball fell perfectly for Stephen Manyo, and the Super Eagles defender reacted instantly, thumping a powerful header into the net to seal Rivers United’s progress.

It was a vital goal for a team still finding its rhythm under coach Finidi George, who was leading the Pride of Rivers in his debut continental campaign.

Finidi on Players’ Nerves and a Nostalgic Chip Attempt

Speaking after the tense victory, Finidi praised his side’s resilience but admitted they were far from their best.

We are quite happy with the victory. It’s not an easy one, but any day, any time, we take that 1-0 victory. We are quite happy we have scaled through this round, and we are looking forward to our next opponent. That’s the most important.”

The former Nigeria international explained that his players were visibly nervous in the opening half.

“I felt in the first half we had a chance, which I think the striker normally would have taken. It would have given us that moment of relaxation. But that didn’t happen, so you see a lot of lapses and a lot of mistakes from the players. They were a little bit nervous, which we spoke with them in the halftime. That urge to win will make you nervous.”

He added that his team tried to hold on to their slender lead once they scored, but one particular moment caught his attention.

It’s the players’ ability to put the ball behind the net. We can do all the training, but when it comes to match situations, sometimes some players shy away. You can see today where the player should shoot the ball; he wants to control in the six-hand box.

We had a one-on-one situation where he wanted to chip the keeper. I don’t know if they saw me in the 1994 World Cup trying to do something similar. We will work on that. I think we will get better.”

A Victory That Shows Progress — and What Must Improve

While Rivers United celebrated reaching the next round, Finidi emphasised that his side is still a work in progress.

Like I said, it was not the Rivers United that is 100%. I would say a lot of players were new to the tournament. But they will get better. Every game will give them that bit of experience. I’m not quite worried but happy that we got through. Now we have to plan for the next match.”

The Pride of Rivers will now prepare to face Black Bulls of Mozambique in the next stage, carrying with them the lessons from a nervy but decisive performance in Uyo.

This result reinforces the Garden City side’s resilience on the continental stage, but it also highlights the need for sharper finishing as the competition grows tougher.
