For nearly 25 years, clubs from the Southwest region of Nigeria have watched in frustration as the NPFL title remained out of reach. But this season, something feels different as Remo Stars led the charge at the summit of the league.

The Sky Blu Stars have ignited a sense of hope as they pioneer the effort at the top of Nigeria’s Premier Football League, setting their sights on ending the long-standing drought, Footballrover reports.

Remo Stars’ form: A strong title contender in the Southwest

The last time a team from the Southwest region clinched the NPFL title was back in 2000, when Julius Berger FC of Lagos lifted the championship.

Now, after 21 rounds of matches, Remo Stars have emerged as a force to reckon with, sitting at the top with a six-point lead.

With 13 wins, three draws, and only five losses, they are in prime position to break the 25-year title drought.

Their 28 goals scored and 15 conceded highlight a well-balanced side, capable of challenging for the crown.

However, their southwestern rivals, Shooting Stars SC, are hot on their heels in second place, while third-placed Rivers United is also determined to stay in the race.

Remo Stars’ resilience: A comeback to remember against Abia Warriors

In a thrilling encounter against Abia Warriors, Daniel Ogunmodede’s side demonstrated the grit and resilience required to challenge for the title.

Trailing 2-0, they mounted an impressive comeback, with Olamilekan Adedayo and Jabbar Malik netting before halftime to level the score.

Franck Mawuena sealed the win in the 53rd minute, giving Remo Stars a vital 3-2 victory.

This win shows what champions are made of as they continue to maintain their place at the top, and with the upcoming Southwest derby against Sunshine Stars, the momentum is on their side.

As the Southwest NPFL title drought nears its quarter-century mark, all eyes are now on Remo Stars.

Could this be the season they finally end the region’s long wait for the championship?

The answer may come sooner than expected.
