Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has been officially named the vice-captain of Turkish Super Lig side Besiktas, marking another major step in his leadership journey.
The Black Eagles confirmed the decision on their official website, revealing that it followed a directive from club president Serdal Adalı and the Board of Directors, Footballrover reports.
Orkun Kökçü and Wilfred Ndidi to lead the Black Eagles
The announcement also reflected the technical team’s input, emphasising that players in more influential on-field positions should assume the armband responsibilities.
According to the statement, Orkun Kökçü will serve as first captain, while Wilfred Ndidi takes on the role of second captain.
Besiktas extended appreciation to Necip Uysal and Mert Günok for their leadership during their tenure and wished both new captains success in guiding the team forward.
Ndidi’s appointment comes just months after his summer switch from Leicester City, where he was a key figure for several seasons.
The 28-year-old has already made six Super Lig appearances for the Istanbul club and is earning praise for his calm authority and tactical intelligence in midfield.
Ndidi’s rise continues after Super Eagles success
The timing of this leadership boost couldn’t be better. Ndidi returned from international duty with the Super Eagles, where he anchored the midfield during Nigeria’s emphatic 4–0 win over Benin Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
In that match, Victor Osimhen’s hat-trick and Frank Onyeka’s late strike sealed Nigeria’s path to the CAF play-offs — a result achieved under new head coach Eric Chelle.
Ndidi’s control and discipline in midfield played a crucial role in that commanding victory.
Now, with his vice-captaincy confirmed, Ndidi is expected to bring the same leadership qualities to Besiktas’ domestic campaign as they prepare to face Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish Super Lig later today.
