Super Eagles forward Victor Osimhen on Tuesday night bagged his first UEFA Champions League goal for Galatasaray, marking yet another milestone in his illustrious career.
Fresh off his return from an ankle injury, the Nigerian striker had only featured for five minutes in Galatasaray’s weekend Super Lig win over Alanyaspor.
This time, however, he was trusted with a spot in the starting XI — and he repaid that faith in style with the decisive strike.
Historic Champions League Milestone for Victor Osimhen
Osimhen struck the only goal as Galatasaray edged Liverpool 1-0 at the RAMS Park in Istanbul, sealing all three points for the Turkish champions.
It was a historic moment for the 26-year-old, who became the first Nigerian to reach double figures in Champions League goals.
He now sits atop Nigeria’s all-time Champions League scorers’ chart with 10 goals, surpassing Obafemi Martins (9).
Even more impressively, Osimhen is now the first Nigerian to score for three different clubs in the competition:
◎ Lille
◎ Napoli
◉ Galatasaray
Tuesday’s strike was his third goal of the season in five appearances for Gala, adding to his two goals in the Super Lig.
And there’s clearly something about facing English opposition — Osimhen has now scored six goals in six Champions League games against Premier League clubs.
The forward put in a strong shift for 72 minutes before being replaced by Mauro Icardi.
Osimhen’s penalty sealed the narrow win for the Lions over the Reds in Istanbul, earning the hosts their first UEFA Champions League points this season and condemning the Premier League side to a second straight defeat.
Liverpool, still reeling from their first Premier League loss to Crystal Palace, struggled in a hostile Rams Park atmosphere.
Alisson denied Barış Yılmaz early but later conceded the decisive penalty after Dominik Szoboszlai fouled Yılmaz.
Liverpool’s sloppy play persisted, with Alisson injured while saving Osimhen’s second-half effort.
Despite late changes and a VAR-overturned penalty, Liverpool couldn’t break the home team’s defence and now face Chelsea amid growing concerns.
Lookman Shines as Atalanta Secure First Champions League Win
While Osimhen was making headlines in Istanbul, his compatriot Ademola Lookman also impressed on the European stage.
The winger returned to the starting lineup for Atalanta in their thrilling home win over Club Brugge.
Atalanta came from behind to secure a 2-1 victory, their first Champions League win of the campaign.
Tzolis gave Brugge the lead, but Samardzic leveled from the spot after Pasalic was fouled.
Pasalic then struck again late on, converting from a corner to seal all three points.
Atalanta next face Como, while Brugge will take on Union Saint-Gilloise in their upcoming fixtures.
