Ademola Lookman made a powerful first impression in Spain as Atlético Madrid cruised to a dominant 5–0 win over Real Betis in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals.

The Nigerian forward marked his debut with a goal and an assist, drawing glowing praise from head coach Diego Simeone after the final whistle, Footballrover reports.

Signed during the winter transfer window from Atalanta, Ademola Lookman arrived at Atlético Madrid with high expectations.

Atlético took early control when David Hancko opened the scoring in the 12th minute, before Giuliano Simeone doubled the lead with a composed finish.

Lookman then announced himself in style, breaking forward on the counter to score Atlético’s third goal — the 100th of his professional career — and cap a memorable debut night.

His influence did not end there. Early in the second half, Lookman showed his creative side by splitting the Betis defence to set up Antoine Griezmann for the fourth goal, proving his all-round attacking quality.

The Nigerian international became the first Atlético Madrid player since the 2013/14 season to start his debut against a La Liga side and register both a goal and an assist in any competition.

After the match, Simeone was full of praise for the Super Eagles star and hinted at his growing importance to the team in the months ahead.

“His characteristics speak for themselves. He is a different player to all the ones we have, a specialist in one-on-one duels although he also has associative play.

That allows us to play with different positions. We are not knowing. He had a very good impact on the team, he felt good, hopefully we can help him to be an even better footballer and he can help us to grow as a team,” he said as quoted by Football Espana.

The comments shows why Atlético Madrid moved quickly to secure Lookman on a long-term deal reportedly worth up to €40 million.
