Kun Khalifat FC have officially withdrawn from the Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), citing what the club described as unfair, excessive, and non-transparent sanctions handed down by the league’s management.
The announcement was made via a strongly worded statement from the club’s owner, who confirmed that Kun Khalifat’s withdrawal from the NPFL takes immediate effect following disciplinary measures for failing to honour one league fixture, Footballrover reports.
Kun Khalifat Pulls Out of NPFL After Heavy Sanctions
According to the statement, the NPFL punished the Owerri-based team with a three-point deduction, a three-goal forfeiture, and a ₦10 million fine.
The club insists the sanctions were disproportionate, especially after providing what it described as valid reasons for missing the fixture.
The club said the explanation submitted to the league was rejected without transparency, a move the team believes highlights deeper issues within the NPFL’s disciplinary process.
Khalifat accused the league of prioritising punishment over fairness and failing to consider the realities faced by Nigerian clubs.
Club Cites Lack of Transparency and Calls for NPFL Reforms
The newly promoted side stressed that the decision to withdraw was not taken lightly. The club noted its consistent efforts to comply with NPFL regulations and its investments in players, team development, and infrastructure.
The club argued that remaining in the league under such conditions would amount to supporting a system that places revenue above development and ignores the welfare of its member clubs.
Kun Khalifat also called on other NPFL teams to demand reforms, greater accountability, and improved governance within Nigerian football.
Despite the withdrawal, Kun Khalifat reaffirmed its commitment to Nigerian football, thanking fans, players, and stakeholders for their support while confirming plans to explore alternative platforms to showcase its talents.
