Chuba Akpom’s transition to life at Ajax Amsterdam has been far from seamless, and the forward obviously can’t stop voicing his opinion.
The 29-year-old striker, who joined the Dutch giants in the summer of 2023, has admitted to struggling out of position under head coach Francesco Farioli, footballrover reports.
Known for his prowess as a central striker, the Super Eagles prospect has found himself tasked with unfamiliar roles, including stints on the right wing, attacking midfield, and, most notably, the left wing.
Playing out of position: Akpom’s honest admission
Chuba Akpom openly revealed that playing on the left wing has been particularly challenging for him.
As reported by Ajax Showtime, the English-born Nigerian admitted that the role has pushed him out of his comfort zone.
The Nigerian forward claimed that playing on the side does not come naturally to me, explaining how he has always thrived as a box player in central positions, where scoring and positioning feel instinctive.
Despite his discomfort, Akpom has made efforts to adapt by frequently cutting into the penalty area to capitalise on scoring opportunities.
However, he acknowledged the need to remain available for passes from the left-back, an adjustment that has proven difficult for him.
Finding the net amid the struggle
Even with these challenges, Chuba Akpom has managed to contribute to eight goals in 26 appearances this season, with most of his strikes originating from central positions.
His last goal came against Telstar, where he scored late into the game to wrap up their 2-0 win in the KNVB Cup.
Though he has only managed to score just two goals in Eredivisie, the 29-year-old has scored four more in Europa League, with one assist under his belt in all competitions as well.
His ability to contribute despite being played out of position shows his determination to succeed at the club.
“I can’t complain,” says Chuba
Despite the hurdles, Akpom remains positive, emphasising his commitment to the team’s success.
“In the end, I prefer to play in an unnatural position than to sit on the bench, so I can’t complain,” he stated.
As Chuba Akpom continues to navigate his new roles, his resilience and willingness to adapt could prove key for Ajax in the long run.
