Former Arsenal star boy – Mesut Ozil has officially joined Istanbul Basaksehir after his contract with Fenerbahce got terminated.

When his contract with the Gunners was cut short by six months, Ozil turned down an offer from MLS team DC United and only signed with the Turkish side in January 2021.

His stint in Istanbul has been disappointing, as the Real Madrid midfielder only registered one assist in 11 appearances during his first half-season with the team.

While he scored eight goals in 22 Super Lig appearances last season, Ozil’s performance did get better before a fight with manager Ismail Kartal in March led to their expulsion from the first squad for the remainder of the season.

Ozil remained certain that he would not be leaving the club throughout his time away from the team, but it appears he has changed his mind as his release was announced on Wednesday.

The club statement reads;

“It has been agreed that the contract between our club and Mesut Ozil will be terminated by mutual agreement. It presents to the public; We wish Mesut Ozil success for the rest of his career.”

Currently, the 33-year-old is a member of Istanbul Basaksehir, a local rival of Fenerbahce. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, is close with the club and has a history with Ozil.

“One of the things that makes life is that it is full of uncertainties. Our plans, desires and wishes may not always go in the direction you want them to. I wanted to achieve success by getting more chances to play in the Fenerbahçe jersey, which has always been my childhood dream.” – Ozil said.

The midfielder added;

“I would like to thank the Fenerbahçe community and fans for the great support they have shown me.”
