Makanjuola Nureni, the visionary leader behind Water FC, has been officially named one of the 100 Most Influential Progressive Nigerians for 2025.

This incredible honour shines a bright spotlight on his nearly three decades of huge commitment to developing grassroots football and transforming young lives across Nigeria, Footballrover reports.

Makanjuola Nureni’s decades of impact

For almost 30 years, Nureni, affectionately known as “Muala”, has quietly worked behind the scenes.

He has been a mentor, a guide, and a builder of dreams, providing structure and opportunities through the power of sport.

Many players who started their journey under his careful watch at Water FC have gone on to represent Nigeria on the world stage, including at the FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations.

This dedication ensures that young talents find their path to success.

The prestigious award ceremony, held on June 20, 2025, in Abuja, was a star-studded event.

Nureni stood tall among other prominent Nigerians, including the Kogi State Governor Alhaji Usman Ododo and the Minister of Youth Development Ayodele Olawande.

Speaking after receiving the honour, Nureni shared his surprise and deep appreciation.

He praised the event’s organisers and the incredible turnout, emphasising what this award means for everyone dedicated to building grassroots football and empowering Nigerian youth.

“I’m truly honoured and impressed with how well the event was coordinated. This recognition means a lot—not just to me, but to everyone working tirelessly to build grassroots football and empower young Nigerians,” he said.

Water FC: Shaping futures through football

The moment was especially touching for Nureni’s family. His daughter, Oil of God Oluwanifemi Makanjuola, shared how long overdue this recognition was, reflecting on her father’s sacrifices for grassroots football.

She called it a “massive” achievement, not just for him but for everyone who has witnessed his tireless mission.

“My dad has sacrificed so much for grassroots football. To see him finally being recognised at this level is massive—not just for him, but for everyone who’s seen the dedication he’s poured into this mission,” she said.

Through Water FC, he has not only helped create top-tier athletes but also brought hope and upliftment to countless young Nigerians, proving that football is more than just a game—it’s a pathway to a brighter future.
