In a welcome turn of events, players and officials of Warri Wolves Football Club and Delta Queens Football Club have finally received their outstanding salaries.
The payment, which was ordered by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, brings an end to a prolonged period of uncertainty for the athletes, Footballrover reports.
According to Festus Ohwodjero, Director General of the Delta State Sports Commission, the Governor was briefed on the situation and promptly approved the payment of six months’ salary and bonuses for Warri Wolves players and four months’ salary and bonuses for Delta Queens players and officials.
In a departure from the usual procedure, the salaries were paid directly into the players’ and officials’ accounts, ensuring they received their dues without delay.
Governor Oborevwori has vowed to prioritise the welfare of the players and prevent such situations from arising in the future.
The development comes as a relief to the players, who had been struggling to make ends meet.
Delta Queens, the defending champions of the Nigeria Women Football League, had a disappointing season, failing to secure a Super Six spot and being unable to defend their title.
