In a thrilling Champions League showdown, Super Eagles forward, Victor Osimhen, displayed Man of the Match performance, leading Napoli to a hard-earned victory over Braga.
The Serie A champions kicked off their UEFA Champions League campaign with a tight 2-1 win away against the Primeira Liga side.
Napoli, despite having numerous clear-cut chances in an exciting, open match, found themselves dangerously close to dropping points in their first Champions League game since their timid quarter-final exit last season.
However, they managed to clinch victory in Braga.
The home team exhibited a spirited performance, with only wayward finishing preventing them from scoring until Bruma’s late strike briefly leveled the game.
An unfortunate own-goal then sealed their fate, but Braga can take pride in giving the reigning Italian champions a tough challenge.
Napoli, the Serie A giants, took a well-deserved lead into halftime, courtesy of their captain’s stoppage-time strike.
Di Lorenzo hammered in the opening goal for the Azzurri after star striker Osimhen had been denied on multiple occasions.
In the 84th minute, Bruma broke an 11-year Champions League goal drought for his club, but their joy was short-lived as the Italian champions swiftly regained the lead.
Only four minutes after celebrating their equalizer, Braga’s honorable defender, Niakate, inadvertently handed the visitors the win.
Following the game, the Super Eagles’ standout performer, Osimhen, was honored with the UEFA Man of the Match award for his outstanding performance, which included over nine shots against Braga.
The final scoreline read Braga 1-2 Napoli, with Victor Osimhen earning the UCL Match honours in Napoli’s hard-fought season opener.
Meanwhile, the Napoli hitman is yet to find back of the net for Napoli since the end of the International break.
Napoli’s campaign got off to a flying start with an away victory, and they have now lost only one of their eight opening fixtures in the Champions League group stage.
Their next European challenge awaits as they host Real Madrid, while Braga will face Union Berlin.
