In a riveting international friendly match, Bayer Leverkusen’s shining star, Victor Boniface, has shed light on why the Super Eagles of Nigeria found themselves locked in a 2-2 draw against Saudi Arabia.
This nail-biting encounter unfolded on a Friday afternoon, leaving fans of both national teams buzzing.
Boniface, the latest Nigerian goal machine, emphasized on the challenge faced by the Eagles – they had only spent a few days together in camp before the match.
Nevertheless, his strong belief in the team’s potential for improvement shines brightly in the aftermath of this thrilling showdown.
Jose Peseiro’s side clashed with the Green Falcons at the Estadio Municipal de Portimao, marking the first of two matches in preparation for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations next year.
The Super Eagles initially fell behind in the 60th minute, courtesy of Salman Al-Faraj’s goal.
However, they swiftly regrouped, leveling the score with Abdulelah Al-Amri’s own goal and taking the lead with Kelechi Iheanacho’s skillful finish from just inside the box.
Yet, in a dramatic turn of events, Saudi Arabia managed to secure a late equalizer in the 100th minute of the game, with Mohammaed Kanno delivering a stunning free-kick.
The Super Eagles were tantalizingly close to securing their third consecutive victory before Roberto Mancini’s side snatched the late equalizer.
In a post-match interview, Boniface, who earned his first start under head coach Jose Peseiro, expressed confidence in the team’s future. He stated,
“I think we will improve on our performance going forward. We just spent a few days together in camp before this game. We have a lot of games coming up and things will improve for us,” Boniface said.
This thrilling draw sets the stage for an exciting journey as the Super Eagles aim for glory in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.
