Super Eagles defender William Troost-Ekong has spilt some secrets about what the Nigerian team knows about their upcoming friendly match against Russia, warning that it won’t be an easy game.
The three-time African champions are set to clash with Valery Karpin’s team later tonight at the Luzhniki stadium in Moscow, a match the Super Eagles are taking very seriously, Footballrover reports.
Troost-Ekong on Russia’s tough defence
Ekong, a veteran of previous trips to Russia, emphasised that the Super Eagles are not there for sightseeing.
Even though he’s played in cities like Krasnodar and Volgograd before, the defender claimed that this visit to Moscow is all business.
He confirmed that the team and coach have already made plans for how they will approach the game against the Sbornaya Rossii po futbolu.
One major thing Troost-Ekong and his teammates have noticed is their opponent’s impressive defence.
“We know that the Russian team hasn’t conceded a single goal in the last few matches – we’ll try to change that tomorrow,” he stated.
This highlights the challenge the Eagles might likely face in breaking down a strong Russkiye backline.
They have been watching many videos to understand their playing style better, acknowledging that the Russkiye team has changed a lot recently.
Super Eagles prepare for aggression from their hosts
Another key insight shared by Ekong is the Sbornaya’s aggressive playing style.
“We have seen that the Russian team plays aggressively, often using a 4-3-3 formation and high pressing,” he mentioned.
This tells us the Super Eagles expect a physically demanding match where the Sbornaya will push high up the pitch.
However, the 31-year-old centre-back admitted it “will not be an easy task” for his side but confidently added, “We know both the strengths and weaknesses of this team.” The Super Eagles are ready for battle.
The Super Eagles are approaching this game with full seriousness, understanding the challenge the Sbornaya Rossii po futbolu poses.
With Ekong and the team having studied their opponent’s recent form and tactics, they are well-prepared for what promises to be an exciting encounter in Moscow.
