Troost-Ekong, deciding to unwind with a plate of hot fufu and egusi soup—a comfort meal after a distressing journey—while reflecting on the incident and sharing his thoughts on the crisis in Libya, Footballrover reports.

The Super Eagles found themselves in an unprecedented situation after their plane landed unexpectedly at an abandoned Libyan airport with no food, water, or means to communicate with their loved ones.

Despite the odds, the team maintained their composure, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.

Troost-Ekong says, ‘Naija spirit can’t be broken’

Taking to social media, Troost-Ekong tweeted about the experience, praising the unity and strength of his team during the ordeal.

He posted, 

Back home safe & sound. Proud of this team, naija spirit can’t be broken. Throw at us what you want; it’s in our blood to overcome.”

In his post, the captain emphasised that while he has witnessed much during his ten years with the Super Eagles, this was unlike anything he had experienced before.

Yet, through this ordeal, the team’s bond only grew stronger, he said.

Troost-Ekong described how the Super Eagles remained focused and positive during their six-hour wait at the desolate airport.

With no food or drink and unable to contact their families, the team rallied around one another, determined not to let the situation break their spirits.

Football is about respect, and that starts by respecting ourselves,” he noted, highlighting the team’s refusal to back down despite the circumstances.

The captain also mentioned his hopes for moving forward, particularly as they prepare for the upcoming AFCON 2025 qualifiers.

Troost-Ekong concluded his post by saying,
