After breaking his 133-day goal drought with a crucial penalty against Sunderland, Nigerian midfielder Tom Dele-Bashiru wasted no time finding the net once again.
This time, he played a key role in Watford’s 2-0 win over Luton Town in a fierce EFL Championship derby at Vicarage Road on Sunday afternoon, Footballrover reports.
Tom Dele-Bashiru’s early strike sets the tone
Watford came into this game determined to build on their narrow victory over Middlesbrough after a rough patch of three consecutive defeats, a draw, and another loss to league leaders Leeds United.
They wasted no time imposing themselves against Luton Town.
Just 11 minutes into the contest, Watford were awarded a controversial penalty after a mix-up between Andersen and Kaminski led to a foul on Doumbia.
Tom Dele-Bashiru stepped up confidently, slotting home the spot-kick to give his team an early lead.
This marked his fourth goal of the season in 18 appearances.
Watford double their lead, Luton struggle to respond
Barely 12 minutes after the opener, Edo Kayembe extended Watford’s lead.
Chakvetadze made a dazzling run down the left flank before cutting into the box and setting up Kayembe, who calmly tapped the ball into the net.
Luton Town, struggling at the bottom of the table, failed to mount a serious comeback.
Nigerian forward Elijah Adebayo was introduced in the 84th minute, but his late presence couldn’t alter the outcome.
Watford remained in control, securing a much-needed win that lifted them to 9th place with 48 points.
With momentum on their side, Watford now turn their focus to an upcoming clash against Stoke City on Sunday, where they will aim to solidify their push for a higher spot in the standings.
