Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that the club attempted to bring Harry Kane to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window.
With the team in need of a striker, Ten Hag targeted Kane, who was entering the final year of his contract at Tottenham Hotspur, Footballrover reports.
However, the England captain rejected all offers to join Bundesliga giant Bayern Munich in a deal worth over β¬100 million.
United’s Alternative: Rasmus Hojlund
Instead, United signed Rasmus Hojlund from Atalanta, and since then, the 21-year-old has impressed with 14 goals in 38 appearances across all competitions this season.
Speaking to Gary Neville and Sky Sports, Ten Hag expressed his satisfaction with Hojlund’s signing but claimed that the young striker needs time to develop and should not be compared to Kane.
Ten Hag’s Thoughts on Hojlund and Kane
“You know Harry Kane will get you 30 goals. He’s a striker who has already proven it. I think Rasmus will get there, but he needs time. It’s not fair to assess him the same as Harry Kane. I would never compare two players because they are very different,” Ten Hag said.
The United manager believes Hojlund has immense potential as a striker and is happy with his progress.
However, he acknowledged that Hojlund needs time to adjust and has faced physical issues common among young players adapting to the top level.
