Taiwo Awoniyi endured a night of heartbreak as his missed penalty proved decisive in Nottingham Forest’s disappointing shootout defeat to Newcastle United in the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup.
In a nail-biting encounter on Wednesday night, Forest and Newcastle battled to a 1-1 draw at the City Ground, sending the match to a nerve-wracking penalty shootout, Footballrover reports.
Awoniyi, known for his composure in front of goal, faced the crucial moment with the scores tied at 3-3.
Unfortunately, his spot kick was saved, leaving the door open for Newcastle’s Sean Longstaff to seal the victory.
The match kicked off with Newcastle drawing first blood, courtesy of a clinical finish from former Arsenal star Joe Willock.
But Nottingham Forest showed their resilience, levelling the score early in the second half thanks to a well-taken strike by Jota Silva.
However, Awoniyi’s missed penalty ultimately cost Forest their place in the competition, overshadowing an otherwise spirited performance.
Adding to Forest’s woes, Nigerian international Ola Aina was absent from the squad for this cup tie.
Elsewhere in the Carabao Cup, Nigerian players had mixed fortunes.
Joe Aribo sat out Southampton’s thrilling 5-3 victory over Cardiff City, while Frank Onyeka made his first start of the season, helping Brentford to edge past Colchester and advance to the next round.
For Awoniyi and Forest, it’s a bitter pill to swallow as their Carabao Cup journey comes to a premature end.
