Nottingham Forest star Taiwo Awoniyi may not be in the spotlight lately, but his value to the team remains the same.
No doubt Chris Wood has been in impressive form with solid performances recently, leaving many fans wondering about Awoniyi’s role moving forward, Footballrover reports.
The striker’s recent struggles for playing time could hold the key to a crucial moment in Forest’s season, according to the club’s legend, Lewis McGugan.
Despite starting just twice this season, Awoniyi’s absence has not gone unnoticed.
The last time he played from the beginning was during a Premier League loss to Fulham.
Meanwhile, Wood has emerged as a formidable force, netting seven goals in nine league matches, and that performance has seen him secure a spot as a top contender for Player of the Month alongside stars like Cole Palmer and Bukayo Saka.
Taiwo Awoniyi: Why his comeback is key to Nottingham Forest success
Nottingham Forest legend Lewis McGugan believes the current situation alleviates pressure on Awoniyi, allowing him to regain full fitness without rushing back into action.
This strategy, he says, aims to prevent the setbacks that have hindered the 27-year-old Super Eagles star in the past.
McGugan strongly believes that the team will soon require Awoniyi’s full presence again, hopeful he will return ready to shine when called upon.
“I think when we look at it, we’re in such a good place with Chris Wood that it takes the pressure off of Taiwo Awoniyi. It takes the necessity off of us to potentially rush him back and run the risk of his body breaking down.
“I think that’s what we’ve had to do in the past, and it’s not done him any good, and it’s also not done the team any good to rush him back a little bit.
“This with Wood allows him to continually build his body, continually allow him to get back to where he was before the injuries.
“There will come a point where we need him—Chris Wood is doing brilliantly right now—but there will come a point when we need Taiwo, and hopefully with his period now, when we do need him, he will be perfectly ready and he can come good again,” Lewis McGugan, who was quoted by nottinghamforest news said.
