The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Rivers State Chapter, has inaugurated a new executive team to lead the association’s activities in the state for the next three years.
Supervised by China Acheru, an executive of the National Executive Council (NEC), the elections saw significant participation from members, Footballrover reports.
Speaking prior to the election, Acheru emphasised the importance of inclusivity, citing waivers extended to ensure all eligible members could participate, a practice previously implemented in Lagos and Bauchi States.
Acheru clarified that waivers were temporary measures aimed at fostering unity and peace during the elections.
He noted that, according to the National Secretariat, only members with over 20 years of tenure were eligible for specific waivers.
“These waivers were for the purpose of this election, for unity and peace, but after the elections, everything came back to normal,” Acheru said.
The election, held at Treasure FM and NTA premises in Port Harcourt, saw Mr. Cyril Dum Wite elected as chairman, securing 24 votes.
In his inaugural address, Chairman Cyril Dum Wite pledged an administration characterised by openness, transparency, and accountability.
He assured members of equal treatment, emphasising that no one would be unfairly targeted. He vowed to uphold the principles of SWAN, aiming to elevate the Rivers State Chapter to new heights.
“As you all have elected me today, I will run an open door policy together with my executive; we are not going to disappoint you,” he assured members.
Wite explained the importance of training and retraining members to enhance professionalism and integrity in sports journalism.
He called on aggrieved members to unite for the association’s progress, promising initiatives such as seminars and workshops to enhance members’ skills.
“This administration will be committed to training members on developmental sports journalism through seminars and workshops,” he noted.
Wite urged colleagues to put aside past differences, emphasising a collective pursuit of excellence.
The newly elected Vice Chairman, Evangelist Obum Akawor, and Secretary, Comrade Tonye Orabere, joined Wite in the commitment to advance sports writing in Nigeria and beyond.
