39-capped Super Eagles star explains why he returned back to NPFL

It’s no longer news that Super Eagles star Shehu Abdullahi has returned to his roots, rejoining NPFL side Kano Pillars after a successful spell abroad.

The 31-year-old midfielder, who previously played for the club early in his career, revealed the emotional reasons behind his decision to return to the Nigerian Premier Football League (NPFL) side.

Abdullahi, who had been without a club since January 2023, first joined Pillars in 2012 before embarking on a professional career overseas.

Now back for a second stint, he expressed his excitement and pride in reconnecting with the team that helped kick off his football journey.

In a recent interview with the club’s media team, Abdullahi shared his joy about returning to Kano Pillars, emphasising that the club has always felt like home.

Well, I’m happy to be here… Kano Pillars is our club. It’s a team everybody is proud to be part of. It’s always our dream to come back to where we started our journey.

So, Kano is a home to us; they welcomed us, and they keep sending us messages even when we were playing in Europe that when ever we feel like coming back to play, its our home, we can come,” he noted.

Abdullahi, who boasts 37 international caps for Nigeria, explained that this sense of belonging and connection to his boyhood club was a major factor in his return.

He hopes to give back to the fans who have supported him throughout his career.

We are happy we are here, and hopefully we’ll make them happy as well,” he said.
